Reg Clean v4.1a

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I have tried running Reg Clean 4.1a a couple of times now but it seems to
hang up near the end of "Scanning Type Library Identifiers for Errors".

My computer is making noises like it does when being scanned but nothing
further happens in the Progress Chart in the Reg Clean dialog box.

I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2.
I previously ran Reg Clean on a Windows XP Home, SP2 computer without this
problem.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Reg Clean 4.1a is not compatible with Windows XP,
don't use it.

I have been using the Registry Cleaner found in
System Mechanic for several years and never had
a problem with it. It automatically creates a
"registry undo" backup file as a safeguard.

You can try System Mechanic free for 30 days:

Hi,

I'm not surprised. RegClean was designed for Win9x operating systems,
and didn't work particularly well on them. It's been discontinued and
unsupported for years, now. I certainly wouldn't advise trying to use
it on a modern OS.

I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2.
I previously ran Reg Clean on a Windows XP Home, SP2 computer without this
problem.

Avoid registry cleaners, especially ones not specifically designed for
the OS you're running. You're only asking for problems.

And, anyway, why would you think you need to clean your registry?

What specific problem are you experiencing that you *know* beyond
all reasonable doubt will be fixed by using a registry "cleaner?" If
you do have a problem that is rooted in the registry, it would be far
better to simply edit (after backing up, of course) only the specific
key(s) and/or value(s) that are causing the problem. Why use a shotgun
when a scalpel will do the job? Additionally, the manually changing of
one or two registry entries is far less likely to have the dire
consequences of allowing an automated product to make multiple changes
simultaneously.

The registry contains all of the operating system's "knowledge" of
the computer's hardware devices, installed software, the location of the
device drivers, and the computer's configuration. A misstep in the
registry can have severe consequences. One should not even turning
loose a poorly understood automated "cleaner," unless he is fully
confident that he knows *exactly* what is going to happen as a result of
each and every change. Having seen the results of inexperienced people
using automated registry "cleaners," I can only advise all but the most
experienced computer technicians (and/or hobbyists) to avoid them all.
Experience has shown me that such tools simply are not safe in the hands
of the inexperienced user.

The only thing needed to safely maintain your registry is knowledge
and Regedit.exe. If you lack the knowledge and experience to maintain
your registry by yourself, then you also lack the knowledge and
experience to safely configure and use any automated registry "cleaner,"
no matter how safe they claim to be.

Further, no one has ever demonstrated, to my satisfaction, that the
use of an automated registry "cleaner," particularly by an untrained,
inexperienced computer user, does any real good. There's certainly been
no empirical evidence offered to demonstrate that the use of such
products to "clean" WinXP's registry improves a computer's performance
or stability.

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for the reply.
Are you saying that all registry cleaners and repairers are unnecessary.

Registry Mechanic is highly advertised all over the Internet.
Also I have Norton SystemWorks which has One Button Check Up which I run
occasionly. It notes that it finds errors and then gives you the option of
having the program repair the errors.
Plus there is much more of this type of software on the Internet.
Everyone is not a Computer "Geek", therefore not everyone can edit the
Registry
with regedit and many have to rely on this type of software program to
correct errors in the Registry.
And, as many registry cleaners claim, they can remove left over unnecessary
entries after you remove software programs.
Are you saying these programs are unnecessary?
What about the inexperienced computer user that removes software. How does
he expect to get rid of the unneccesary entries in the registry?

You have answered my specific question and I thank you and Carey for that
but now you have left many users questioning what they should do, if
anything, with registry edit and repair.

I guess i'm glad I never purchased Registry Mechanic. I see an ad for it at
least once per day.
