Ok maybe I'm not explaining this right. When I'm looking a my pics in XP My
Pictures folder and I've been playing around; renaming; deleting pics; I
notice other pics in the foler appear to be doubles. When I click the
thumbnail a different pic opens. So I right mouse click refresh thumbnail and
it fixes it.

Since the thumbnails are kept in a separate file in each directory, my
guess is that your alterations are confusing the code that associates
a file with a particularl thumbnail.
I'm not surprised that this association is not robust.
Refreshing will re-scan the files and "heal" the thumbnail associations.

I had the same problem recently. I fixed it by deleteing the
thumbs.db file. This a hidden file so you may need to change your
Windows Explorer settings to see the hidden file.
Once deleted, the next viewing of the directory showed the correct
thumbnail and file.
Any time you "open" a folder, you are actually running Windows Explorer.
It is also in the "All Programs" list under Accessories.
