Reformmating Computer Containing SP2

My computer hasn't been running at optimum performance lately, so i decided
to reformat my computer and install Windows XP instead of the currently
running SP2.
I have 2 drives, a C & D which are at 8 and 72 gig respectively. The D drive
is currently unallocated.
The problem I've been having is that since my XP Sp2 is installed on the C
drive it has been filled to the max, and it ownt allow my computer to perform
basic functions. SO when i try to format my C drive, it wont allow me.

I have used Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, Compression, and I've basically
uninstalled everything on my computer including Office XP. I only have 300 mb
of space left.

When i try to install the traditional Windows XP over the SP2 it wont allow
because the SP2 is a "newer version".


1. I would like to know how to reformat my C drive or

2. How I can expand my C Drive or

3. How I can merge my C Drive with my unallocated D Drive.

Because you have SP2 installed, and your XP Upgrade is without
it, it is an older version than what's installed.



You have two choices:



1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.



2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including
SP2, and use it. See

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

Expand your drive? You can't expand it.

I assume these are not two physical drives, but two partitions on
a single physical drive.

Unfortunately, no version of Windows provides any way of changing
the partition structure of the drive nondestructively. The only
way to do what you want is with third-party software. Partition
Magic is the best-known such program, but there are
freeware/shareware alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next
Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial,
so you should be able to do what you want within that 30 days. I
haven't used it myself, but it comes highly recommended by
several other MVPs here.
