reformat xp pro

I tried to reformat my hard drive by booting to xp pro cd but my computer
shuts down before xp goes through all it's checks. My hard drive is a new WD
160 gig. Any sugestion?
 
What do you mean by "shuts down"??
power goes off??
XP Installation shuts it down........and it does not reboot??
At what stage formatting or installation does this happen??

Did you use the installation CD that came with your hard drive to initialize
the drive?
