Go into the BIOS and set the CDROM to boot first. Put the XP CD in the
CDROM. Exit and save from the BIOS. Follow the directions given to you
by the XP CD. Once you're done, go back into the BIOS and reset it to
what it was before.

The request for password that you are getting is not coming from Windows so
if this is the only reason you think you need to reformat your hard drive,
you have misdiagnosed the problem and have the wrong solution. This has
nothing to do with your operating system.

The request for password is coming from the BIOS. This did not happen all by
itself. Either you or someone else set the password in the BIOS. If you set
the password and have forgotten it, you can reset the BIOS to defaults (no
password) quite easily if you have a desktop machine. Open the machine
(while it is turned off!) and either change the position of some jumpers on
the motherboard and/or remove the CMOS battery. Sometimes it can take as
long as a day for the board to lose its settings, sometimes only a few
minutes.

Refer to the manual for your specific motherboard for how to do this.
