Reformat - Outlook express won't recognize saved .dbx

Hi, this is three questions really. Somehow... somewhere I
picked up some program (it attached itself) on the
internet, which caused 5-10 adds to pop up on new windows
so that my pop up stopper program didn't recognize them as
such, every 50 seconds. I tried deleting all kinds of
files and could not remove it. Not even my Norton 2004
anti-virus saw this thing as a problem So, I had to
reformat my hard drive. Now here comes my problems

1. I eventually got xp - professional to install after 12
hours of getting error "i386\asm" missing or corrupt, or
externally altered, quitting installation. How in the
world do I fix this for the next time I have to format my
hard drive.

2. What the heck kind of program was it that started that
advertising campaign and how do I make sure it never
happens again?

3. Before formatting I saved to a CD the file folder
Outlook, which contained the all the folders and emails
stored in windows format of .dbx. When I copied them back
into the newly installed XP outlook folder, (the one under
identities\bunch numbers\Microsoft\outlook)and opened up
Outlook express, I find that it doesn't recognize any of
the .dbx. So I tried adding a folder just to see what it
stored it as. It stored it with the same .dbx name, that I
had copied to this folder. I really have to have some of
the emails located in those .dbx as they contain business
info. How do I get them back?

2. Have no idea what it was, but it surely didn't need a format to cure.
Note: Do not depend on on Norton and pop-up stoppers.

For the next time, run all of these, all of them:

3. You mention Outlook, yet speak of .dbx, which are Outlook Express
extensions. Other than that, you need to import them via: OE/File/Import.

Good luck!
