Reformat of Hardriver

Hi There,
I have a FujitsuSeimens Home PC running windows XP.
Last night i wanted to re-format my entire hard drive to start again from
scratch.
When i performed my re-install of XP it asked me if i wanted to wipe the
previous OS and install a fresh new one, which i said yes i wanted to do
that, Thinking it would wipe all the files of my harddrive to let me start
again. I was using the Windows XP disc supplied to me with my PC.

When i finished the re-install i found that i still had a lot of files from
before i started to re-format whihc i dont want. I even still had a few MP3's
stored on my HD.

Why is that? and how can i start again from scrtach as if i just bought my
PC and it only had the factory installed programs???

Can anyone help me with this???

it sounds as if you did not format the drive. there is an option to do this
during install: my guess is that you opted for "leave the current file
system intact" instead of "format using the NTFS file system" (or fat32 if
that was what you wanted)

hm. if you had formatted the drive (as opposed to being "pretty sure" ;-)
that you had done so) then there would be no way that files could still be
on it

If you had deleted the partition when asked and formatted when asked then
the files would not be showing.

Anyway to answer your question do the following:
1) boot with the XP CD and at the first screen where it asks what you want
to do use the option to Repair using the Recovery Console - press 'r'.

2) At the command prompt (C:\Windows) type the following and press Enter.
DISKPART

3) An interface is displayed which you can move through with the Arrow Keys.
Pressing "D" will delete the highlighted partition.

4) When finished leave the XP CD from the drive and type EXIT and press the
Enter key . The computer will reboot and the XP CD will restart. This time
select the option to Install Windows then proceed as normal.

I've seen OEM recovery programs that just reinstall Windows and leave
everything else alone. It sounds like this is what happened here.
