Referring to cells by range names

yes, correct on the two spaces vs one. one is sufficient.

however, i still cannot make the formula work without indirect an
using quotes for the range names.

i have enjoyed the help and the spirited discussion

Shot in the dark.
This may be a version issue.
Try:
<Tools> <Options> <Calculation> tab,
And check "Accept Labels In Formulas".

Tell us if that works.
