redirections and locking up

Whenever I am on the web when I try to go into a site i
am redirected to other sites and locks up for long time.
I try an alt,ctrl,delete just to sort of proceed.
When i tried to do this posting it did the same thing.
Took 2 minutes or more to bring this up. Do you have any
suggestions where this is and what I can do to solve?
Would reloading XP help?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
