Red X

I have been reading some of the postings about the empty box in Windows Mail
with the red X. I'm sure I never had this problem before and I haven't
changed anything. I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with Vista Home Premium, 2GB
RAM, use AVG Anti-Virus with Firewall and do not have the Windows Firewall
activated. Under Tools/Options/Security I have the "Block images ..." option
unchecked.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I need to add something to this that I just discovered. On an e-mail from a
friend that was supposed to have a pic and had the box/red X instead, I hit
reply to ask the friend to check and see if her settings were right. When I
hit the reply button it would not send. I tried this same thing on another
e-mail with box/red X and the same thing.Then I also discovered a couple of
e-mails where I could not right click, "Save As" and save the attachment to
my desk top for scanning before opening it. I've always done that and never
had a problem.

Disable your antivirus and to see if its the root cause. Can you do a System
Restore to an earlier point before you started experiencing this problem?

Well, here's another twist. I went back to Windows Mail and into the trash
folder; tried opening the e-mail with the box/red x and the picture now shows
up. Then I opened an e-mail that I had not been able to save the attachment
on and this time was able to "Save As" to my desktop.

I've had the same anti virus ever since I got the computer and no problems,
ever. I really don't want to do a system restore because this has been
happening for a while and I don't know how long. I've just been putting up
with it and putting off trying to find an answer.

I guess I will just trash anything I have a problem with and then go into
the trash and see if that continues to work. I sure miss old Outlook Express.
I have used that for years, until I bought this new computer -- and I never
once had a problem with it.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I don't want to do a system restore because I don't recall exactly when this
started happening. I just haven't taken the time to do anything about it
until now. Disabling my anti virus did not help.

I just received an e-mail full of joke pictures. Out of all the pictures,
about 4 showed up and the others were box/red X.

If the antivirus program is from Norton or McAfee, you'll probably
have to uninstall it, not just disable it, to keep it from causing
problems with Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

I have to apologize to Andre Da Costa. I was in too big a hurry and later
discovered that what I disabled was my sypware program. So then I did disable
my anti virus, which is AVG. After disabling, the pictures came through. I
wrote to AVG about this problem. If they write back with a fix I'll let you
know.

I do not use MacAfee or Norton and wouldn't.

Thanks,

Uninstall AVG.
Then do a Custom install of AVG and do NOT install email scanning.
