Red Square

Why is it in a lot of sites, that instead of displaying a link or a picture,
all I get is a square with a little red X in the corner? I'm thinking that
maybe it is a security issue, however, if I turn down security settings,
nothing changes. What can I do?

Red X image displayed where the applet should be, applets won't run
