Red coloured X instead of icons

I use xp media 2005. When I logged on today there is some problem on web
pages and emails. Some former icons are now only displaying a red coloured
X. There are some graphics missing from boxes also. I tried system
restore and searched for bugs but that did not help. I'M STUMPED. Can
anyone help.

Thanks for reply Alan. I have tried everything to the best of my limited
ability. There is still a problem. On hotmail and some sites gif images are
not displayed and on some sites there is some overwriting (words written on
top of others). I am tempted to reboot the XP recovery disc but that seems
tad drastic.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

All the information I am aware of is at that site for the red x
problem. If there is anything there that you did not follow and passed
over, please try again or ask here.

The only time I have personally seen overwriting, it was because I was
using Large Fonts in another operating system. In XP the equivalent
seems to be:
Large size (120 dpi) in Control Panel-Display-Settings tab-Advanced
Is yours set at other than the standard 96 dpi?
