recycle bin, scheduled tasks, and sound problems

Hi,

During the last week I noticed 3 problems on my
windows 2000 professional machine.

1) I can't open the recycle bin. If I double click on it,
nothing happens. If I right click on it, there is no
option to explore it. Yet, if I view it through explorer
(c:\Recycled) or through the command prompt, the data is
still in it.
2) I can't open the scheduled tasks window from control
panel. This is acting very much like the recycle bin.
Double-clicking does nothing and when right-clicked there
is no option to open as there is for all of the other
icons in the control panel. I can't even open it from the
command prompt with "Control schedtasks". Plus I don't
think that any of the tasks are running.
3) I can't get sound from my machine. When windows boots
I still get the startup music, but after that I can only
play RMI files. Nothing else comes out. No wav's, no
sound from mpegs or avi's, nothing. Yet if you leave an
avi running in the background and go to shutdown, you will
hear sound for a second, right where the windows exit
sound would be if i had one configured. I tried updating
the sound drivers, but that did nothing.

I'm not sure if these problems are all related or not, but
they seem to have all happened in the same day. Nothing
new was installed or changed, at least not that I'm aware
of. If anyone knows how to fix any of these problems I
would be greatly appreciative.

Thank you very much.

For starters, scan your PC with an external virus scanner,
e.g. on www.antivirus.com ("free online scan").

ok, i scanned it. except for winpup (an ad-ware program)
it found nothing. any other ideas? i had norton running
on it for months before this happened.

In view of the multitude of unexplained problems,
I recommend a complete clean installation of Win2000.

There seems to be a misconception here. Contributors
in this forum are NOT employees of Microsoft. They are
volunteers who are prepared to give some of their time
free of charge to other people, sharing their knowledge
and expertise.

I note that none of the other numerous volunteers who
must have read your post, has put in a suggestion of
his/her own. I suspect this means that none of them has
any better suggestion than the one I made.

dude, relax. it was a joke.

It seems we differ in our sense of humour. A little
"thanks anyway" would, in my opinion, have been
more appropriate than a sarcastic reply, even
when written with a sense of understandable
frustration.
