Recurring desktop folder

Last week (1/20/10) I requested help w/ getting rid of a folder that keeps
reappearing on my desktop. XP SP3, MS Word 2003. (I asked for further help
on that thread but had no luck getting a response).

One of the responses to my original dilemma was the following:
"I don't know what's causing the problem but highly suspect you set that
folder-name in Word 2003. Upon boot, preliminary software for MS Word is
launched, then restores a folder it expects to see (in this case
'Compilation').
There's a good chance that by scanning the registry you may turn up the
offending occurrence. Checking Words preferences may do the same."

I am a newbie and would like to try these.
1) To do a registry search for the word "compilation," do I use the regular
search box or is there a run command that I need to use?

2) Where do I check Word's preferences.

boot?

Where in MS Word would I verify the folder(s) that MS Word expects to
see?

I want to check mine.

It turns out at the same time I was submitting the above Lousi answered the
seach issue on the original thread (which I though was dead). Sorry for any
redundancy!

1) To do a registry search, you have to be in the registry. I would not
advise that unless you are *very sure* of what you are doing.
2) Open Word, go to Tools, Options. There are all your preferences. Look
under the File Locations tab. One of the locations may be pointing to your
Desktop. Change it to somewhere else and see if that fixes it.

Look in your Start menu, All Programs, Startup and see if there's a shortcut
in there called Microsoft Office. If there is, right-click on it and select
delete. Everything will run fine without it starting up along with Windows.
