Is there a prefered sequence of transfering items from an old "corrupt" pst
file to a new one?

Explain what you need to do. How do you intend to access a file that is
"corrupt?"
The only way you can ever access a PST file is to open it in Outlook. Then
you copy data from one PST file to another. You do not use import or export
with PST files.

The current pst file opens and functions. It is approaching 2GB and compress
does not compress it. Running scanpst.exe, errors are flagged. I do not
want to loose any data during the fixing process and I don't want to go thru
the backup and compare each item with the fixed pst to make sure it still
exists.

If it opens and functions, convert it to a Unicode PST which doesn't have the
2GB size limit. See:
