Hello, and thank you in advance for viewing.

I am working with a Dell Inspiron 4100 and during the
boot process I receive the BSOD stating that there is an
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. I did a search for this and saw
that I should goto the recovery console and run chkdsk /r
from the command prompt after hitting "r" to repair a
Windows XP installation. When got to the command prompt
I ran chkdsk /r and recieved the error "autochk.exe could
not be located in either the startup directory or the
CDROM drive" I then did a "dir" on the C: and received
the error "An error occured during directory
enumeration". Is the HD done for on this thing??

It's hard to tell if your hard disk is toast yet or not.
I hope you have your important data backed up. My best
advice at this point (since the recovery option didn't
work) would be to try a new fresh install. Boot for your
windows xp install disk and proceed through the options
for a new install. See if it will format the drive. If
it won't format for a new install, then I would say the
drive is toast. Good luck.
