Recovery of Win2k DC from one h/w model to another fails

Hi Folks,

(This is on a Win2k, SP3+, on HP DL360 G1/G2 h/w)

Trying to restore the forest root and child DCs to a test machine (a
completely different hardware, either a desktop or an HP ML530/570) -
the restore goes fine, but boot up blue screens on me, booting into DS
restore mode is no help either (I can provide more details on the type
of errors if needed). Any suggestions?

So far, I have looked at 824125, 263532, 237556, 249694, 237556 - I
haven't tried 556 yet. Deleting the NIC/Video drivers didn't help
either.

I must point out that this is for a DR test, and we are not
experiencing a real disaster right now (thankfully!). All DCs are
fully redundant in our env.

Any ideas/suggestions/help appreciated.

OK, maybe I made this sound trivial, but it is really important that I
have a resolution to this problem even though we are not technically
experiencing a disaster!

AD gurus - your help will be appreciated.

Jack, this is not an issue that is caused by active directory. My guess
would be that if you tried the same test with a non DC you would get a blue
screen as well.
Normally this is caused by the HAL (hardware abstraction layer) being
different on the machine that you are restoring to.
You can check out the following article that discusses this type of
scenario.
But I want to be upfront about this, it is normally an unpleasant process
and can be time consuming. If you already have a machine available to
perform a restore to, why not just go ahead and add that machine as a second
DC so that a hardware failure will not bring down the domain.
