Will the Recovery CDs bought from HP/Compaq actually allow me to
re-install the XP OS, or will the the unit still demand the actual XP
CDs to verify re-installation of the OS?

Supposedly, the OS CD that came with the unit is just the Windows XP
Home Edition Upgrade w/SP1.

The six floppy boot method just brings me to the point where it's
asking for the original XP installation disks.

I am working on a Compaq Presario S6020WM. It was caught in a 'setup
loop' - constantly rebooting into the setup, shutting down, and
starting the process over.

the recovery discs supplied with the unit will restore it to "factory state"
i.e as it was when first purchased, including the os
