Recovery Console Does Not Recognize Windows

Hi,
I need to replace MSVCRT.DLL in the \system32 folder. The computer
will not boot in safe mode or command prompt. Placing a Windows
Installation CD will let me get to C: but not change or list any
directory. I made a regular bootable CD, which allows me to look at
the directory structure on C: and move around -- and yes, all my files
are intact -- but I can't copy a new version of MSVCRT.DLL or rename
the .backup file I had created for just this contingency. Any
thoughts?

This is a "gotcha": While Windows is up and running, you must
explicitly allow the recovery console to access all folders.

A far more versatile method is to boot the machine with a Bart
PE boot CD. It gives you full access to all files and folders in
a Windows-like environment. Alternatively you could temporarily
install your disk as a slave disk in some other WinXP/2000 PC.

DLLS may not be actually "missing" but the message is usually an indication
that the boot process has been corrupted and the files not detected..

Another option is to ignore first repair option - Recovery Console - and
proceed to the second repair option. At that point the Windows installation
will be "detected" and you will be given the option to "repair" - select OK.

If a Windows installation is not indicated - YOOL.

Thanks SO very much for this, Pegasus. as it so happens, I know that I
have to merely copy the DLL into the folder, so I am now going to try
to make a BartPE boot-CD if I can. My only question now is that I have
a Windows XP Pro CD while the windows on my HDD is a Windows XP home
SP2+ config. But that shouldn't make any difference to accessing the
HDD and renaming a file... right?
thanks again,
AK

You need the WinXP Pro CD in order to manufacture the Bart PE
CD. When you have it then you can use it to boot into any DOS or
Windows OS, simply because the Bart PE CD is based on WinXP,
and WinXP will recognise all FAT/NTFS file systems.
