Recovering/Importing old email

My old email is on a CD but when I try to import or open these files I get an
error message telling me I don't have permission:

File access is denied. Yoyu do not have the permission required to access
the file D:\Ourlook\Personal Folders(1) .pst\\

I find nothing on this disussion board that addresses this and I also find
no recent posts. Is this still the most viable resource for help?

You need to copy the PST to your local HDD and remove the read only access
(right-click on the file, scroll to properties, remove the read only
attribute). Don't import the PST, use File > Open instead.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input but now I get a new error message, as follows:

"The File C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\Outlook\Outlook.pst is
not compatible with this version of the Personal Folders information service.
Contact your administrator."

Any other advice or direction to another website where I might find the
answer?

Thanks again for your help.

The version on my current laptop is 2002 SP3. The previous laptop from which
the email was dowloaded to CD was purchased in April 2005 so I will assume it
had 2003 on it but do not know for sure. It was destroyed.

That link you just posted is not working. It gives a 404 error. But while
I'm asking you questions, do you know if I can purchase an upgrade to Outlook
2003 without going the full Office 2007 route. I can't afford the whole
package and I can't find anything about upgrades on that part of the website.

Thanks again for your help but unless I read it wrong, this post applies to
those users who have Outlook 2003 on their system and are trying to work with
email files created in Outlook 2003 or earlier. My situation is the exact
opposite.

Anything you can suggest would be helpful, particularly if I misread this
post.

What it means is that if your PST was created using Outlook 2003, you'll need
to convert it to be usable for Outlook 2002 on a PC using 2003.

Hi,

You may also try our product Advanced Outlook Repair. Other than the
normal repair/recovery functionality, it can also convert the Outlook
2003 PST files into Outlook 2002, 2000 or lower versions. Just set the
source PST file as "Outlook 2003" format and the destination PST file
as "Outlook 97-2002" format, and repair the source PST file, you will
get a fixed PST file that is compatible with Outlook 97-2002.

Please visit http://www.datanumen.com/aor/index.htm for detailed
information about Advanced Outlook Repair.

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe

Can one also just copy and paste the .pst file to

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\?

No. That won't tell Outlook how to find it and if you overwrite another PST
of the same name, you'll break the existing mail profile.
