Recovering files from an empty recycle bin

I'm using Microsoft Windows XP Professional and I deleted some file and
folders last night to free up disk space. However today I need to access a
file I deleted as it was not my own. Can I somehow recover this file from the
recycle bin even though I emptied it already?

No, emptying the recycle bin is not reversible, it's permanent. If as you
say the file came from somewhere else, ask for another copy.

As Jay says, once you empty the recycle bin the files are effectively gone.
Windows filing system re-allocates the space the files occupied for re-use.
If the space has not yet been re-used then you could with the aid of third
party software recover the files from the hard drive. OnTrack's Easy
Recovery Pro is one such application that works well, but there are others -
Google for File Recovery software or Undelete utility. Note that all the
time you are using your PC in the interim, you are reducing the
possibilities of recovering the file.

OnTrack's Easy Recovery Pro costs a LOT of money. Regardless of how well it
works, it looks to me like they offer you the "Free Trial Version" so that
you'll download it, use it, and locate your file; the only catch is that you
can't open it once you've located it. If you want to do that--which is
obviously what people want to do or they wouldn't even know about OnTrack's
existence!--you have to pay BIG BUCKS. Pretty sheisty. Pisses me off.

If it saves you weeks of work it is worth every penny - and it does work
well.
