recovering a folder that was marked private

My registry and system files became corrupt and I had to
rebuild my dell. My user account was originally setup as
private - I can no longer access this folder. How can I
change the permissions/rights on this?

log on as administrator; right click folder; click
properties; click security; click advanced and take
ownership of the folder
