Recover profile

I got a Windows XP SP3 laptop. Long story short here........... I deleted
the account that I've been using for quite a while now and created a new
one. Don't ask why please. However I need to recover the profile to the new
one that includes My Docuemnts, Desktop settings, favorites and whatever
else. the profile and documents still exist in the Documents and Settings
folder. No I remember years ago you can recover this by doing something in
the registry that has something to do with hive and unhive where you can
rename the old proflie to the new one and recover all those settings and
documents. I know I can copy all that stuff over but it's a pain. Can some
help me out on this. Thanks.

The safe way to do this is to copy the old profile via the Control Panel /
System. The not-so-safe way is to hack the registry here:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.

You lost me on this one Pegasus. Control Panel/System?

OK, here is the full path: Control Panel / System / Advanced / User Profiles
/ Settings / Copy to. It pays to be a little inquisitive.

Well thanks for clearing that up. Just wonder why you MVP's assume everyone
is as knowledgable as yourselves. If you had supplied the full command path
the first time I would'nt have screwed the profiles up. now I got to do
everything manually. Thanks again

When I reply then I try to match my response to poster's knowledge, as I
perceive it. Your initial post implied a certain level of expertise. When
you indicated that my reply was outside your experience then I replied
within 15 minutes. If you managed to damage your profile within this short
span of time instead of waiting for my second reply then I feel that this is
largely due to your impatience.

Abosultey due to my impatience. Now because of that I can't even do what you
suggested because the profile shows up as "Unknown account" and no option to
copy. had you have been thorough with your suggestion the first time I
wouldn't be in the mess. Not blaming you because it was my imaptience and
fustration when I went to Control Panel/System and did not see what I was
looking for. I question why you would not want to provide the whole solution
as opposed to only half.

When you ask a stranger for directions and you do not fully understand the
instructions, do you race off in the wrong direction or do you first ask for
clarification?

I gave you two pointers in my first reply:
- The Control Panel.
- The registry hack.
Time for you to explore the registry hack. Post with full details if things
are unclear, this time before you get into deeper trouble. You'll have to be
much more patient this time - I'm signing off for about eight hours.

He did provide the info you asked for. You did not indicate in the OP that
you required hand holding. In fact, the language you used indicated you knew
what was going on but just needed a memory-jogger.

Your response above does "blame" the one who replied to you, as you accused
him of only sharing 1/2 of the solution (which is not true). People here
volunteer their time and expertise to help schmucks like you, and don't need
this grief from you when *you* **** up.
