Did you try booting into safe mode? Did you try booting into the recovery
console, presuming that's an option when you press F7 - and running chkdsk
/r?

Is there a floppy drive?

You should probably get a USB CD-ROM if the Toshiba supports booting from
same (they may have a proprietary external CDRom that will work).

Note that if you have a physical disk problem (which you may not; you
haven't mentioned the exact error message you see) re-formatting and
reinstalling on the same hardware would be futile anyway

Presuming it isn't an actual disk problem, I suppose you could mount this,
or another, hard drive in another computer and install Windows to it (also
copy the i386 directory to it) - then try putting it back in the Toshiba,
booting into safe mode, and praying it at least will let you in that way, or
let you do a repair install. I may be off-base with some of this as it's
been ages since I had to do anything like it, note.

You can connect an external diskdrive to either the parallel/serial or USB
ports
if it has them. One of your friends may have one. Most (if not all)
laptops manufactured in the last 5 years have disk (CD) drives and some
have floppy drives. Yours was manufactured circa 1998. Someone before
you had to upgrade it to XP, and probably used an external disk drive.

pressing F7 or F8 or any F_ keys. does hard disk crash? thanks for any helps
