Recover data from failed disk

I want to recover data from a failed 2.5" winxp laptop disk. I've
attached it to another dual boot winxp/linux system using a
USB adapter. The disk starts and runs. Winxp recognizes
it as a USB mass storage device, but won't assign it a
drive letter or read it. Linux also recognizes it and assigns
it a device ID, but won't mount the device and can't read it.

I'm hoping the problem is boot block, index or data corruption,
and that I can recover at least some of the data. Would appreciate
suggestions and/or links as to recovery procedures and tools. I
can't afford a recovery service, and as to tools, free is good.

Thanks!

maybe it is simply that
the ntfs crashed on it.

what you can do is to
download the trial
called acronis disk director
and see if its scan can
access the data.

Have you tried putting the disk in an internal slot in another computer
as a second slave drive. See if it will read the drive. You do not want
it to boot!

What type of Windows XP CD do you have for the laptop computer? What is
the computer make and model?

Hope this helps.
