Recordable CD Drive not detected

Ted

Hi,

I have a new Dell Laptop Inspiron 1100 - with a DVD/CD-RW
combo drive.

When I try save a project to CD, I get the dialog
Recordable CD Drive not detected.

Tried rebooting, same thing. Burn to this drive all the
time from other programs...

Have the latest version of MovieMaker (5.1).

Any ideas?

Best,

Ted

Hi Ted,

See the second of the 'Dated but Timeless Posts' on the CD Burning >
Introduction page of my website. There's a setting you might have to flip
when you toggle between using the drive for DVDs versus CDs. I have to do it
on my Toshiba laptop.

Hello there,

1st, there is no version 5.1 of Movie Maker. The current version is 2.0 The
information you quote is from a very badly laid out "About Box"

2nd, Turning on Digital Audio "Playback" will have no effect on the
"recording" to a CD-R

3rd, The knowledge base article refered to in the "timeless" article is
2.5yrs out of date. My system is a LOT younger than that, it has both a
DVD-RW and a CD-RW and both of them can be used to make a CD using Movie
Maker, in addition they sgare the same dual port cable.

What will affect the recording is an out of date driver for that device, or
the active by default cd burning software that microsofr hoist on to you.
Turning off the Microsoft attempt at controlling your CD or DVD drive will
improve the chances of the driver for your device working properly. (It
will also reduce the amount of resources taken up by that software on your
system.

as a tech support operator for a laptop company I can
assure you that the above poster is correct in calling
his version 5.1...it's what ships out on all of our WinXP
laptops.

Also, the above fix purposed by Papajohn is the correct
fix and is the one given out daily by us here in our
support center.

Slainte,

Hello there,

There is NO version 5.1, If you are a tech support guy perhaps you need
a refresher on how to check that at microsoft. Please go there and ask what
the latest version of Movie Maker is. I await your apology.

Changing a switch on whether to permit digital audio playback or not so
that recording can occur to what is in any case a digital medium may solve a
problem, but if it does it is a problem itself

The information on his site is 2.5yrs out of date. Can I have the name
of your Tech Support company, I wish to make sure that I never use them. I
would also like to send your employer a copy of your message...it would be
interesting to see what came of it.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly.
