Hi,
What are the experts' recommendations on the correct procedure to move from
Outlook 2002 (SR3) to Office Pro 2007?

I currently only have Outlook 2002 installed. I have a lot of data in
various PST files which I definitely do not want to lose when I move to
Outlook 2007 (with BCM). Other office 2007 applications are new to this PC.

Ideally I'd like to remove the old Outlook 2002 install (obviously without
removing the data) and migrate the current setup (email accounts, folder
views etc) to the new install of Outlook 2007. Just because it seems cleaner
to me to where possible do a fresh install, rather than upgrade over an
existing version.

Recommendations / suggestions / hot tips welcome.
Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

Uninstalling Outlook will not get rid of the PST file(s). You may lose
some settings, but the contents of the PST files are safe. However, it
will still be a good idea to backup all your PST files before the
upgrade procedure.

After the update, you can open the old PST files and use them as before,
or migrate them to a new Unicode-type PST file (use drag-and-drop to
copy items from the old files to the new one(s)).

Hi Pat, thanks for the reply.

I don't understand what you mean by this:
" migrate them to a new Unicode-type PST file (use drag-and-drop to
copy items from the old files to the new one(s)) "
Will this become clear once I install 2007? I guess my questions are
a) why would I want to migrate them, what are the pros/cons?
b) how does copying files change them to unicode?

Also are there any other recommendations or tips? - eg upgrade better than
full install? uninstall Outlook 2002 first?

Hi Adam,

Sorry for not being more clear. Outlook 2003 & 2007 support a new type
of PST file, which allows (a) Unicode support, and (b) a much larger,
essentially unlimited file size (2002 and before was limited to 2GB).
The type of PST file is defined when you create it with Outlook.

If you do not plan for larger PST file sizes, or have no interest in
International languages, then you may as well remain with your existing
PST files. Also, even if you want to migrate eventually, that does not
have to be done at the same time as the 2002 -> 2007 upgrade.

I personally would do a real upgrade, without uninstalling 2002 first.
This will preserve all your current settings.

Hi PAt, thanks for the clarification, that makes it much clearer.
Appreciate your advice.
