Greetings.

Slightly off-topic but I need storage for my files when using MS FrontPage.

I'm using a five year old Gateway G6-350 / MS Windows 98 / Pentium II with
350mhz and would like to upgrade to a better CD Rewriteable / Recordable
Drive.

I have two slots - Drive D and E.

Top drive [Drive D] is a Sony DVD-ROM [DDU1621] [CD-ROM 40x] [DVD-ROM[16x]
which was recently installed.

The bottom drive is five years old and came with the computer. From my
understanding it is vintage 1998 and slow - 2x.

Could you please recommend a good CD Rewritable Drive along with software
for the bottom drive that is compatable with my computer specs.

Somebody had mentioned:

SONY CRX 230A CD/RW with Nero and InCD @ $50.00

Thoughts?

Thanking all in advance.

Do you mean for backup? If so then your current CDR should suffice.
If you're thinking of accessing your web files from a CD then forget it.
You'd be better off getting a new, larger, HD. They're quite affordable
these days.
Also, instead of a DVD-R, a combo DVDR/RW, CDR/RW would have been a better
option.

My processor is Pentium II with 350mhz and I don't want to upgrade.

I'd like to purchase the CD/RW drive to be compatible with the processor.

Right now I have a slow CD/RW with Adaptec software - it is five years old.

I'd like to get some suggestions of a reliable CD/RW drive with software
that is compatible with Win98 and Pentium II @ 350mhz.

Thank you.

You might be battling to find any hard ware these days (other than possibly 2nd
hand) that will work with an old machine like a Pentium II.

Well, after five years with this box and going through one monitor - it
still does everything I need it to do.

The SONY DVD-ROM / CD-ROM that was installed in the top slot recently is
currently a product on the market - not second hand - and it was compatable
with my _slow_ Pentium II @ 350mhz.

So - if possible - I'd like to get a recommendation of a good CD/RW with
software that would be the other drive.

Tony,

Any CD/RW will work, consider getting a Sony one if you are pleased with the Sony DVD/CD drive.

Hey,,, I'm still running a PIII 500...so don't feel left out :-)

I'm running a Mitsumi CR4802TE burner that I bought only a couple of years ago and have had no problems with it. I think my box is from 1999.

A second harddrive is cheaper in the long run, far easier to backup to and
more reliable that CDs.

Don't laugh...but that's how I'm funding my new 'puter ! 600 bucks in 6 months...no small change! I figure since I'm the only one who looks under car seats...its all mine...mine I tell ya!! :-)...the clothes washer is another good source of funding.
