Recommendations for an upgrade

S

ScottReeve

Here is my current system:

AMD Athlon XP1700+
768 MB PC2100 RAM
2 200GB Maxtor ATA/133 HDs
ASUS SocketA MB (A7A8N-X - something like that...)
DVD burner

I run a lot of applications (Lotus Notes, Microsoft Excel/IE, etc.)

But the kicker is the video applications: Hauppauge PVR-150 for
capture, and the Hauppauge Media MVP server for playback. That's where
the system is a bit lacking.

I'm hoping to keep the upgrade at $300 or less.

I'm thinking of a new MB/processor/RAM.
I don't know if I need socket 939 or maybe 754 will do.
I would like it to run 2.0 GHz at least and I would like a gig or RAM.
I always prefer to have 5 PCI slots, FWIW, and it would be nice if the
MB had SATA and firewire.

I would be willing to get a case and a power supply for a bit more. My
current power supply is 400w.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

TIA,

Scott Reeve

If you care about future upgrades you might also want to upgrade your
video card since it's probably AGP by looking at your current system and
most new MB use PCI-E.

That's going to be a hard one to pull off. I bought an xp3200 with an
epox mainboard and a cheap but effective nvidia 6200 card and spent
more than that. Your ps is likely getting up there if you bought it
with the system, so I'd probably buy a new one too. I thinkm I'd just
save my money for a few months and buy a new machine; doing half
measures is pretty pointless.

I suggest you reconsider your meager stated budget, considering what you
want to upgrade.

Perhaps a new video card, like an ATI all-in-wonder.

Betcha five dollars he doesn't have a PCI-E slot on that motherboard.

U cant upgrade ur present system alot, so u will have to get anothe
mb and build on it. Sad thing with PCI-E is that there isnt many use
parts for sale. It is easy to find very cheap PCI-E graphic cards, bu
the CPU isnt out on the used parts market yet so that is an expensiv
thing to buy. I recommend u to wait some more and c if the use
Athlon 64 CPU:s start to drop out on the market

Ok, Scott, sounds like you are not a gamer and want to reuse your AGP
card one more time. I'd like to see you get a DFI LANPARTY UT NF3
ULTRA-D with a socket 939. They're getting scarce, I found one here:
www.atacom.com/program/print_html_new.cgi?Item_code=MBA9_DFIX_LP_24
Processors 2.0GHz and above start at $166 for the A64 3200. Retail
Opteron 146, which has 1MB L2 cache from Newegg is $212. Maybe
add a gig of Crucial Ballistix.

I have an MSI K8MM (MS-6741) Socket 754 /w an AM64 3000+ (2.0GHZ

1GB 3200 DDR400 ( I don't recall the brand
3 PCI Slot
2X/4X/8X AG
800mhz FS
It uses the VIA VT8237 chipset

You can find the fulls specs here

http://www.emachineupgraders.info/dir1/motherboards/socket754/msi6741.shtm

Because I had a lot of the hardware already (Video, capture cards
drives...etc...) I paid under $250.00 for the entire system

I would however, suggest getting at least a 500W power supply, tha
400W won't cut it for long

It is possible, I upgrade every year...if you shop smart, you can sav
yourself a lot of trouble and money
