Recommendations for 19" LCD Screen

Hello,

I have been trying to make a decision on a 19" LCD display in the mid price
range. I want it to be able to play the latest games as well as watch
movies and process some video from my DV camera.

So far have narrowed it down to the Samsung 930BF 19" LCD or the Viewsonic
VX924 19" 3ms LCD.

I would appreciate and advice or recommendations based on your experiences.

BTW the monitor will be running off a reasonably grunty dual core AMD PC.

Thankyou,
Shane

The Viewsonic VX924 is probably not what you want. It
is a great game LCD, but it is nearly square. So far, the
best LCD monitor that I have used for all-around stuff is
the Dell 19 inch that is shipped with the Dell 9100 PC.
It is plenty wide, bright, sharp, and 8ms .. or fast enough
for gaming and movies. I find that I prefer the wider
monitor. Note: most of the 19 inch monitors tend to be
a bit squarish. Not the Dell.

The Dell 'UltraSharp' monitors are indeed excellent.

But I'd recommend the Sony SDM-S94B, I have one, and its fantastic.
Excellent image quality, response times are good, despite being a business
monitor. (No problem for action games and DVD watching).

Go for a decent brand; forget the low-cost Taiwanese crap.

Just my 2 Euros worth!

Huh?

*All* of the 19" LCD displays I've seen have a native resolution of
1280X1024 (5:4 aspect ratio). That's squarer than a traditional CRT (4:3),
but the point is that they're all the same.

I have seen monitors with an 8:5 aspect ratio (1680X1050 native), but they
were listed as 20 inchers. They tend to cost more than 19" ones, but there
will be overlap in prices. It should be possible to make a 19" in something
other than 1280X1024, but I am not aware that any exist.

For the original poster: sorry that I can't recommend a 19" LCD for gaming
from personal experience. I'm still living with a 19" Trintron CRT.

Samsung displays have had a reputation as being good for gaming, but the LCD
market is changing fast and there may be better ones at the moment.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Mine is a 20", samsung 204t. I do not play games on it, so, can not comment
there but have watched dvd movies and it seems to work fine.

I am not sure if you want to spend too much for an lcd right now because a
new standard is coming out, display port, which will make dvi obsolete. I
did not know this when I bought mine.

Same here. I have a 17" LCD on my other computer but my gaming
computer uses a 19" LG Flatron. I need proper multi-resolution support
for my gaming PC.

"Display Port" ??? Just what we need. Another standard.
It is making me jumpy every time I buy something. Soon
as I pay the bill, sure as the dickens somebody says, "
Aw .. you shoulda waited just 2 more weeks and you
could have ... ". What I really want is an untra-wide
LCD monitor like the one in the next office. It has 2
stands, and the WinXP desktop looks great on it.
Must be at least 24 inches wide, and it is not an LCD
TV ???? He just shrugs and says it came with the
computer ??
