Recommend Basic Scanner

Hi. I'm looking for a reasonably priced scanner for my son to take to Uni for
use with his Laptop.

Requirements:
Up to 60 UKP.
Basic scanning of documents & photos but not negatives/slides.
USB1.1 or 2.
Reasonably light and compact.

I've been looking at the Canon Lide 20/30/35/50 range and am leaning toward the
recently released Lide 35. Can anyone comment on these scanners, recommend any
alternatives or offer links to reviews?

I have heard from people who've owned the Lide 20, to stay away from that
one completely. The Lide 30, and 35, are good...but slow. Lide 50 is
better.

I've read since making the post above that the 20 and 30 are slow compared with
the 50. The 35 appears to be as fast as the 50 according to the Canon specs but
I'll look into this further. Mind you, the price difference between the 35 and
50 is very small and the 50 is easier to find because the 35 is brand new, I
just thought that the with the 35 being new it might be better than the 50.

I'm also looking for a basic scanner. I don't know much about scanners
and haven't used them very much.
Are these LiDE scanners slow basically because they are USB 1.1 ?
I recently borrowed a hp USB 1 scanner (can't remember the exact model
but that was an entry level unit). It worked ok, it wasn't especially
fast but the speed was fine with me.
Can I expect similar speed with a LiDE 30, or are these units slow
compared to other USB 1 "regular" units?
Is there a substantial speed difference between different models of USB
1 scanners?

I have no first hand knowledge of these scanners. I've read that the
35 is a repackaged 50 - same basic scanner. But in at least some of
the advertisements I've seen, the 50 comes with Adobe Photoshop
Elements 2.0 - a very useful photo editing program, but the 35 does
not.
