Recommend a video trancoding program for IPod

My wife wants to watch movies on her iPod, so I need to convert lots of avi
files to something iPod can play back (e.g., mov or mpeg4). I know that Pro
Coder 2.0 is the best video transcoder, but there is no way I can spend $700
to buy it. I've tried a couple 3rd party video converters but the video
quality was bad. During the process, I screwed up my XP Pro SP2 system by
installing & uninstalling DivX & QuickTime and had to restore my system.

So, can anyone recommend a reliable video transcoding program?
