First you must have the appropriate software installed to open that file type. .Doc files would attempt to be opened using word pad
but if the file was created by MS word you would not be able to open it without installing either word or a word file viewer (which
you can download).
GED files are created by a program called GEDCOM which is a genealogy program. You would need to have that software installed to
open the file properly.
To change the program used to open a file type you would open windows explorer and then select folder options in the tools menu. On
the file types tab the recognized extensions are shown as well as the program which is used to open them.
The issue in opening most file types is that you need to have the
appropriate program installed. For example, to open a .doc file,
you need Microsoft Word (or some compatible program) installed.
I'm not personally familiar with ged, but according to http://filext.com/, it's a GEDCOM Family History File, and can be
read by any program that tracks family histories.
Your problem is very likely that you just don't have the
appropriate programs installed.
