Recognition capacity problem for WD caviar 80G HDD

Hi Folks,

This is my first posting in this group... Be indulgent, i'm a
beginner...

I've replaced an old 7G HDD by an WD caviar 80G HDD. The 80G capacity
isn't recognized properly in the BIOS, I see only 65G with le LBA mode
activated... I have a Phoenix Bios 4.0 release 6.0.D and a Asus MEB-VM
motherboard.
Just to test... I installed the OS win xp sp1 and the HDD size is the
right capacity, and all seems to work fine.

What kind of problems can happens if I let my conf like this? I see on
many posts I have to flash Bios, but nothing explaining what happens if
I don't. I contacted the computer's manufacturer and they tell me
there's probably a motherboard limit but there's no problem to use the
new hard drive.

Can someone help me to understankd what could happen and what should I
do? i'm confused!

Thanks a lot!

Nothing except the way its reported in the bios for you to read.
and what should I do?

You dont need to do anything, just carry on regardless.

That what computers are designed to do.

You should go to SP2, SP1 has some serious bugs.

If you use the drive in DOS you may get read errors when reading files
that are in the over 64GiB area.
I see on many posts I have to flash Bios, but nothing explaining what happens if I don't.

Your drive can be used/accessed up to the 64GiB Bios limit recognized size.

You could make a 64GiB partition and a second using up the rest.
At least the first will be fully useable in DOS.
