is there a way to increase the 'recently used file list' more than 9 in excel
2003?

Nope.

Maybe you could create a workbook that contains hyperlinks to your commonly used
files????

No, but you will have a shortcut list for them going way back in the
hidden folder named

"C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Recent"

Just set your system to show hidden and system folders
