Looking for help on MS.com and saw this board also....

Small office network (4 PC, all with XP). Network was
initially setup 2 years ago with wizard and all has
worked well until this week.

First began with internet problems where gateway PC made
connection and could initially surf and receive email
after a restart. After awhile, gateway PC would timeout
on email (MS OutlookExp) and web pages would give DNS
error... even though the other PC's could process email
AND surf.

Even when the gateway PC had the above internet problems,
I was able to perform a network backup (BackGenie)
yesterday with no problems

Today, the LAN itelf is not working. WHen I use network
wizard to try and re-install, the process aborts before
completion and gives error.. " spooler subsystem app
encountered problem and has shutdown, all information
will be lost"

THe only info on MS site about spooler refers to printer
issues and there has been no new hardware installed.
Earlier THIS week however, several critical MS updates
were installed.

SUggestions??

Honestly, get a Linksys as a dedicated gateway. It is
hard to know, but your gateway has obviously been
compromised and damaged. You might be able to run a
Emergency repair procedure or system roll back. My
advice, get a 4 or 8 port Linksys BEFSR and you will be up
and secure...
