Does anyone have a link to the security patch that was rushed out at the end
of last year. I have tried searching the Microsoft support site, but have
not found it. I assume it would be offerd in the XP update area, but the
only update that it offers is SP3. I gather that SP3 has to be installed to
get subsequent updates. Having spent a week removing SP3 from three PCs, I
have no intention of putting it back.

cf. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-078.mspx

MS08-078 should be offered via AU and WU to WinXP SP2 and WinXP SP3.

None of the updates post SP3 are offered until SP3 is installed.
NB: MS08-073 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (958215)
should also be installed; cf.

Thanks for the info.

Are you saying that no updates at all were offered until you'd installed SP3
or that no updates at all, including MS08-073 and MS08-078 are offered to
WinXP SP2?

Did you recently do a clean install of WinXP?

Exactly. Only SP3 was offered as an update - nothing else. Once SP3 was
installed a whole raft of further updates became available including the one
I was after. However, although the installation of SP3 didn't seem to
affect Windows itself, a number of applications developed strange side
effects which effectively rendered them useless. Even the parts of my AIO
printer would appear and disappear in a regular cycle for around 10 minutes
or so after boot up. Also when an attempt to hybernate was made it failed
because the parallel printer port was preventing hybernation. My PC does
not have a parallel printer port.

Restoring the backup I made before installing SP3 cured all problems.

I upgraded my laptop at the same time and it too developed problems
including the WiFi card BSODing when it was plugged in.
Did you recently do a clean install of WinXP?

No - in both cases.

Thanks for your interest.

If you'd declined to install SP3, you would have been offeref the other
updates.

What your current problems, if any, are now, I haven't a clue since you
didn't quote my entire reply.

I have installed both the security updates that you directed me to to my non
SP3 system. I now have no problems that I am aware of.
