Recent .ani Patch Problems

Hi everyone,

The recent .ani patch that was released last Tuesday (3rd April) has, since
then installation, caused the computer (Windows XP Pro SP2) to lockup at
random times. I also installed the Realtek High Definiton Audio patch as
well.

The computer is up-to-date according to Microsoft Update, and has been
checked for viruses, spyware, etc. I have also checked the memory as well.

Can anyone help me?

What happens if you uninstall the two patches?
 
I haven't tried running the computer without the two patches, excepting
before the .ani patch release, which was when the computer was running
perfectly.

I could uninstall them, but wouldn't Windows Update just re-download them
again? And, how about the patch being 'critical'?

If you uninstall the patches, and then disable automatic updates, apart from
the fact that Windows Security Center will drive you mad, hopefully, it
should no longer crash / lock up.

I have removed the Realtek High Definition Audio hotfix, and reinstalled my
Realtek Audio device in Windows, by letting XP choose the drivers from the
Realtek install folder.

Anyway, I'll see how this goes...

If you would like me to uninstall the .ani hotfix as well, please ask.

Well - I am not telling you to do anything - I am asking what you have tried
and pointing out the logical 'next steps'.

In your original post you stated that your problem appeared after you
installed the .ANI patch and that you also installed the RealTek patch as
well. I assumed you did the latter because you were having the trouble
described in the RealTek fix web page. I assumed you did the former either
because of automatic updates or just good computer maintenance.

- If you were not having the RealTek issues - then you never had to install
the RealTek patch.
- You should only install drivers from each hardware manufacturer's web
page/provided media - not the Windows Update site.
- If you did not have trouble until you installed the two patches - then the
logical test to see if they are causing the trouble is to uninstall them.

Change your automatic updates so that it downloads but asks you when to
install. That way you still get notified (without any effort on your part)
when new patches are out - but you get to choose what/when you install.

After you removed the RealTek stuff - is your computer locking up anymore?
If so - the next logical step is to undo the only other thing you said you
did before you noticed the issue and uninstall the ANI patch.

Sorry for not being clear about the steps that I have taken.

Yes, Windows Update installed the .ani patch because it is set to. After
this, I received the Realtek High Definition Audio error, and so installed
the Realtek hotfix as well.

Yesterday, I decided to uninstall the Realtek patch, and install new drivers
from Realtek. I no longer received the Realtek error on startup.

I have set Windows Update to the 'Notify before Downloading and Installing'
option.

Oh - the lockups did start after the .ani patch had been installed. I
installed the Realtek patch because I also had the Realtek error on startup -
but this was several hours later, and about five lockups as well.
