There are two main possibilities.

The first is that it's rebooting when it crashes. Windows XP has a
helpful default to just give up and restart on crashing. To turn this
off, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. On the Advanced tab,
in the Startup and Recovery section, click on Advanced. Just below the
middle of the dialog that comes up there's a checkbox for "automatically
restart" in the System failure section. Clear this checkbox and choose OK
back to the desktop. Now, if the problem is a crash, you will see error
messages that may provide meaningful clues as to what's causing it.

The second problem is failing, damaged, mis-configured or otherwise
incompatible memory. Memory problems can cause the system to suddenly
shut down. When I see this cause, the system doesn't always just restart
and soemtimes has a hard time starting again. Memory test programs can
give you a good idea if this applies. For example,

I must have something wrong with my computer. I have XP Home Ed and I don't
see any Startup and Recovery section. There was something else today that I
read about on Microsoft and it was telling me to go to this, go to that, and
it just wasn't there. Where else might I find it?
