Rebooting with USB plugged in problem.

This happens on both XP and Vista. I was just curious if there's a way to
disable it. I have a USB stick plugged in for Readyboost and if I leave it in
when I reboot the system it gives me an error thinking it's a hard drive. For
some reason it looks for a boot file on my USB drive first it seems. So I
have to unplug the thing and reboot to start my system.

I'd like to be able to just leave the USB stick in since I'm only using it
for Readyboost. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What error, what a stupid post.

Probably your BIOS but who knows when idiots like you are about.

The problem is in your bios settings.
You will have to poke around in the bios setting and somewhere there
should be an entry for booting from a USB device. Turn it off.
My computer tried to boot from the Ready Boost drive on the first
reboot after installing. It scared me to death because I had just
installed some software and I thought it had wiped out my master boot
record but then I remembered installing the ready boost drive. I
looked in the bios for the setting to turn it on and off. I know it
is there because when I added my Western Digital USB hard drive a year
or so ago it took me several looks in the bios before I finally found
the option to turn it off. On the next reboot Vista started from my C:
drive so I don't know what was that.

Maturity levels never cease to amaze me on public forums. Nice of you to
chime in "." Nice username. I'm sure it's as creative as you get.

Ed, my boot parameters are set to floppy, cd, then HD. Nothing else. The
first time I ever had this happen was when I left my iPod plugged in. I'll
dig around some more in the BIOS and see if anything looks out of place when
I get home. Thanks.

The only way my computer will boot with a USB drive connected is if I
connect the drive to an add-in USB connector card. Then the drive isn't
recognized until further along in the process - during the actual Windows
initialization. It may work for you also.

might change the boot sequence to cd then hard drive and DROP the floppy.
only change to boot from floppy if you really need it.

Look thru your BIOS settings for boot priority and for booting from USB
devices. You should find the necessary settings.
