reboot loop??

My mother just called me, and their XP Home is caught in
a logon loop. 1. they never had to logon before..they
only have the one profile, and since installing xp,
they've never had a logon screen. Suddenly, this logon
screen comes up...when they click on the one profile (no
psswrd on it) explorer starts up, then boots them back
out to the logon on screen (says loggin out, saving your
settings, etc.)

This happens over and over and over...and they can't get
into windows.

I've had my father load in safe mode...it won't load with
safe mode w/networking...only safe mode. another funny
thing is the computer will load up in safe mode under
Administrator...but not under his profile. So I had him
add a new profile...still doesn't work...had him go into
msconfig...turn off everything but required
services...still doesn't work.

I told them they *must* have changes something recently,
and they said the only thing they did was perform a
security update from MS. So next I had them do a system
restore to before that update...still doesn't work.

I'm at a loss...anyone heard of this or hopefully have
some suggestions/answers?

thanks

I've seen this problem in Windows 98 before, but not in XP. If their computer was upgraded from Win98 perhaps this may be a fix. In safe mode, find the system.ini file in Windows. Look for lots of multiple entries under the [TTFontDimenCache] section. If there are a lot there, the fix can be found under Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 311367. It's a little long to explain here. Good luck!
