hi-
i purchased a multimedia front panel with audio, mic, gameport, usb
and firewire that has cables to run through the rear of the computer
to plug in. because of the slew of wires that have to pass through
the rear (through an open pci slot) i need to rearrange pci cards
because the mass of cables would weigh on the other pci cards. i and
am wondering if i will screw anything up as to the computer
"recognizing" the cards if they are put in different slots. for
instance, i know that my mouse is only recognized in a certain usb
slot...will the computer not recognize my video card, etc if put in a
different pci slot? i have winxp pro and an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo
and AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 400FSB 512k.

i don't want to screw up my computer so thought i'd ask first.

thanks,
carl

Generally no, except that you may not be able to use the slot next to
the AGP slot, due to some shared resource (not to mention the mondo
HS/Fans some 3d cards have).

* If it were me, I'd go for a front panel card that connects to the
motherboard FP connectors, and in fact made one, mostly out of the
back end of an old ISA sound card.

Carl,

I think you'd be ok moving your cards.
It's a pain in the ass, but I'd do it one card
at a time and reboot and check in the device
manager to be sure there was no problem after
each reboot.

windows key + pause + hardware + device manager

XP is pretty good sorting out PCI cards.

If you're using Windows XP, it is probably OK.

By the way. If you have trouble with the USB mouse, if you have a
USB to PS/2 adapter lying around, try putting it on the mouse USB
cable and plug it into the mouse PS/2 port.

Good luck.

That is, if the mouse is a USB/PS2 dual mode. USB only mice won't work
with that adaptor.
