realtek rtl8139 nic driver update

I bellieve the reason I cannot see my pc on my network is because of my nic.
When I test my network I get, "The test has failed and indicates there is a
hardware problem that may require attention from an HP Support Professional."
The latest driver installed is dated 2001. There is a more recent one at
realtek.com, however, it is an rtl8139 a/b/c/d. It's supposed to be the same
'except' for some things. It explained what these were and how to work around
it, but it was all the same to me. My question is: Is this driver update
compatible with my rtl8139 (no letters follow mine). Can I install the driver
and see if it resolves my network issue? I am afraid to reinstall my nic
because I don't have the disk I ordered when my computer crashed after the
cables close to my house got hit with trees (twice in two days -long story).
Anyway, Bestbuys accidentally kept my $25 disk after fixing my computer, and
unless I just really have to, I don't want to call hp since my warranty ran
out and they won't talk to you unless it's for an arm and a leg. So, can
someone out there help shed some light to how I can fix my nic (or network
issue) without having to get a new disk?
P.s. I still have disks #2 - #8, but I don't think their any good without
#1. You decide. Thank you so very much in advance.

Realtek 8139 drivers are built into windows 2000 and XP. I've also
used the drivers from realtek.com without any issues. You should be OK.
