RealPlayer uninstall problem

My computer runs WinXP SP3. After Secunia PSI determined that my version of
RealPlayer was insecure, I tried updating it. I couldn't find a way to do
so; and since I never use the program, I decided to uninstall it.

However, when I tried to do so in Add/Remove Programs, I got the error
message "Uninstaller component missing." I then tried to open the program to
see if I could find some way of uninstalling it. A couple days ago, I had
opened the program without a problem. Tonight, however, I got an end-user
license agreement that I was to accept before I could install the program.

But the program and a multitude of its folders and files already exist on my
computer. What should I do to get rid of it?

Thank you!

Jo-Anne

If I were you, I'd forget what Secunia said about it and use System Restore
to roll back to 2 or 3 days ago (to a restore point just before you messed
with this)

I'm still using (and prefer) an older version of Real Player, version 8, for
the rare occasions when it is useful or needed (which is not too often now,
since WMP seems to won over; but you never know - it's nice to have around,
if needed)

Not a good idea (IMHO), per above. I'd suggest: forget the scare
tactics.

For the error: "Uninstall component missing" Real.com support suggests
updating or uninstalling and doing a clean install.
Performing a clean install of RealPlayer
http://real.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/real.cfg/php/enduser/popup_adp.php?

Were you unable to update due to install problems or you couldn't find an
update? If the latter you can download the latest version here:
http://forms.real.com/service/download_player/

If you still have a problem either downloading/installing the latest
version or uninstall to clean install:

Thank you, Bill. I didn't mess with it, though. All I did was open
RealPlayer a couple times to look for an update. This last time is when it
wanted me to accept a license.

Thank you, Brian. I couldn't find an update despite clicking on "update" in
the RealPlayer menu. Re uninstalling so I can do a clean install, I can't
uninstall. As I said earlier, I can't do it in Windows Add/Remove Programs,
and I can't do it in RealPlayer. All I have right now is a bunch of unusable
RealPlayer folders and files. I suppose I could accept the RealPlayer
license and see what happens.

Providing you have a firewall , antivirus and antimalware , forget
what Secunia determines . If it`s installed , uninstall it .

Which program are you suggesting that I uninstall--Secunia or RealPlayer?

I understood that you couldn't uninstall it, the links provided are what
RP support suggests although I should have placed the update download link
before the clean install link. Have you tried to update it using the
instructions on the linked page? If you did and it still won't
install/uninstall, the last link provided is what they suggest, to contact
RP support.

I would suggest that you:

1) Uninstall Secunia.

I tried it when I saw it recommended on Download Squad (I think) and
it told me that several of my trusted programs were not secure. I
dumped it immediately.

2) install Real Alternative. Very simple, small program. Works with
all Real Player files. Make it your default for those files and don't
worry about uninstalling Real Player.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/real_Alternative.htm

As I recall from years ago - when I got weary of all the crap RP tried
to do to mung up my Win98 system - it made entries that can be found
in MSCONFIG. Open that and untick any of those.

Apparently you have to have a license for even the free version. I finally
downloaded the new version, and I had to agree to the license before it
would install.

Thank you, Brian! I used the second link and downloaded the newest free
version of RealPlayer. At that point, I was able to uninstall it with
Add/Remove Programs. Question: At the end of the uninstall process, I was
informed that one file couldn't be deleted. It's in Documents and
Settings\MyName\Application Data\Real\RealPlayer. I assume it would be OK
for me to delete it manually?

Thank you again!

Thank you, Randall! I'll check out the Real Alternative program. I don't
plan to uninstall Secunia PSI, however. It has proved very useful in the
past. I discovered that it pays to check the path of the programs it says
are insecure. Often, what has happened is that an earlier version of an
updated program still exists somewhere on the computer and can be
vulnerable.

According to what they mention in the below link for uninstall/reinstall,
there are a few folders left behind that need to be deleted. The Documents
and settings folder isn't listed although I don't think it matters. If you
delete from the location you mention don't empty the trash, leave anything
deleted for RP in the bin for a week or so and if nothing goes amiss, then
empty the trash.

Thank you, Brian! I used the first link and deleted Common Files/Real. I'll
follow your suggestion for the file remaining in Documents and Settings.
