Read Receipt causes Message Conflict

I have set up Outlook to always generate a Read Receipt when the recipient
opens my email to them. Frequently, but randomly, I receive the Read Receipt
duplicated as a Conflict Message with the following message:

"Conflicting edits have been made to the same item. To resolve this
conflict, select the item in the list below you wish to keep and then choose
'Keep this item' or choose 'Keep All' to preserve all the versions".

Any ideas why this is happening, and can it be prevented?
