Read only option when sharing database

Is it possible in access to get a read only access on a database if someone
is already in the database.

Example: Myself and a coworker are sharing a database. I am the owner. it
is password protected. However, we both can go in and make changes at the
same time as long as we are not changing the same cell.

We are looking to set the security up so that if I am in the database, she
gets a read only message saying it is locked or opened by me and she can read
the data only, and vice versa.
(Very similar to excell)

Thanks.

Why? Access is built for multi-user access right out of the box. If you
both happen to edit the same record at the same time, you'll get a message
telling you so, with options to save your changes, or discard them.

But we don't want to have to retype our information all over. We may be
inputting different information into the same record. Why should we type all
of the information all over again, because the other person "beat" the other
to saving. I think that if I am editing, no one else should be able to edit,
until I am done, or have the option to attempt to edit and just hope we are
not editing in the same field. There has to be a better way!

In my experience, it is rare that two users are editting the same record at
the same time. Your request to make the entire database read only if
someone else is using it would be a bigger time waster. You wouldn't be
able to do anything until the other person gets out of the database.

Give it a try and see how it works for you.
