Read only directories and other problems...

Hello
I have following problem all my directories on all drives became read-only (
file system is NTFS ). It's a homecomputer so I am an
administrator on it, and what's strange about this directories I can't
change their attributes. I tried to make
scandisc but it says there are no errors. But when I try to change
properties and apply it
seems to be ok,but after closing window with properties and running it again
the read-only comes back. Next strange
thing is this dirs aren't really readonly, you can write to them as you
wish. My hdd is ok, I thougt it could be
broken but the same is on the other hdd. I don't think it is possible to be
a virus ( I have antivirus from a very
long time and I update it every day, I also have a firewall ( it's also
updated frequently ). I made a test I
formated one of partions ( with data not a system ) and I put back all data
on it, after I made it all dirs are still readonly... I think
something happend to windows but I don't now what. I don't want to reinstall
( with repair option ), is there some
better way ? May guess is it's something in registry broken but I don't know
what it can be, where to look for ?

The read only folder attribute does not have any meaning. It is in fact
marked with a grey mark. This means indeterminate. That setting does
not interfere with reading and writing to the folder.

the same problem with not being able to get rid of the
check.

Sam, I'm sorry I don't have an answer for why you can't rename folders
on your system, but it does not have to do with the "so called" read
only attribue on the folder properties. XP does not use it for that
purpose. Hopefully someone will offer some more advice on the specific
cause and resolution for your issue.

Thanks Rock. I'd seen this article. Notice it says that
you can rename folders even if they're read only, but I
can't. ... I just went to the other machine that has this
problem to check for the error message I got, and I COULD
rename the folder!!

I'd been away for several hours, and the system had gone
into a power saving mode - disks & monitor shut down, so
that when I used the mouse & things woke up, I had to
click on the appropriate used - the only one - to get back
to my windows session. Then, when I tried to rename
folders I hadn't been able to rename, they got renamed!

The thing I love about computers is all this consistency!

you can rename folders even if they're read only, but I
can't. ... I just went to the other machine that has this
problem to check for the error message I got, and I COULD

lol..yep the gremlin that goes away on reboot or the phase of the
moon...glad it's sorted out for you..
