Read error on CD-R/RW: Hardware or OS problem?

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2.
The CD reader/writer is Mitsumi CR-48XGTE.

When I try to play MPGs from disks I have burned myself, playback -- in
Windows Media Player -- stops at 58 seconds whatever the actual length of
the video clip. Is this a hardware error, in which case I will replace the
drive; or is it an OS error, and if so, how can I fix it?

How to I find the firmware version of the drive?

The Mitsumi website is useless - it doesn't even list this model.

Not all hardware is going to work in XP. You need a compatible driver.

The firmware version is usually listed in Device Manager properties for the drive.
