Anyone have any direct experience with this?

Currently in alpha (www.reactos.com). From their site:
"Opensource effort to develop a quality operating system compatible with
Windows NT applications and drivers."

Very basic, not a lot of support for hardware or software just yet.
Exciting though--worth keeping an eye on it.

Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron? "Quality" and "compatible with"
anything "Windows"?

Hasn't this been in alpha since the 20th century?

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. Maybe they'll have a working
alternative to NT 4.0 by the time mankind colonizes the Tau Ceti system.

And will continue so for at least one more year. They had to stop
development and go to all code again, because some stupid code
contributers added microsoft-specific copyrighted code...
