ReactOS Alternative to Microsoft Windows Under Development

FYI
ReactOS free (open source) alternative to Microsoft Windows
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReactOS
http://www.reactos.org/

For experimenters it may be fun to fool with...
I tried it.

It's trying to be a more or less clone of Windows-2000 however it has a
long ways to go.

I have been watching it for a number of years and my estimate is that
they will have about six years to go if they keep development going at
the present rate.

For those who are seeking an alternative to Windows I suggest Ubuntu.

Lots of code borrowed from WINE hence the Windows API support. After a
decade, if you want to revert to Windows 2000, this is a clone you could
play with but don't use it as your mission-critical or workplace
platform.

Not ready for prime time use. Still lots of crashes. Really not enough
developers (only 32), and with the deep skill set, needed to keep this
project moving (http://www.reactos.org/wiki/People_of_ReactOS). Been in
alpha status forever (over 15 years) and will remain so unless they get
a lot more attention and bigger developer community working on this. So
far, it is more a proof-of-concept than a real Windows contender.

While they have auditing to prevent code from Windows showing up in
ReactOS, aren't some of the programs included in ReactOS from Microsoft?
For example, aren't the Notepad, Wordpad, and Paint programs just copies
of Microsoft's programs? Does Microsoft permit redistribution of their
bundleware outside of Windows?

It work good in
My Virtual Machines
By Microsoft

More like a Clone of
Desk-Top
Linux Operating System
By: Xandros
;)

I found no similarity between React OS and Linux. Many years ago though
I did give Xandros a try and it had the most refined looking GUI I've
ever seen. Too bad the oS itself did not work. It was the only version
of Linux I've ever seen whose applications continuously crashed.

I have been using OpenSuse for a while.

How is it for supporting USB modems ?

I have a Linux able modem, but can't find anyone who knows how to get it todial out to an ISP. (my wireless connection is down at times. :-( )

The modem is new and it would be nice to use at least most of it's features..

Take care.

LOOL a crasher Very Truly

It reminded me of the OS/2 GUI, very nice.

After spending a bit of time adjusting fonts , etc, I finally have a
pretty decent looking desktop now.
